Do I Have the Flu?

For those of you lucky enough to have never had the flu before, count your blessings! Until very recently, I used to be able to say the same thing but now that I can check this illness off the list, let me tell you what I experienced and what to look for if you suspect you may have the flu.

Rapid Onset
Unlike a cold which comes on gradually, the flu hits you out of nowhere. For example, I felt slightly achey in the morning (which I thought was from working out) and by the afternoon, I was so tired and much more achey. The next day I could hardly get out of bed due to muscle aches, had a cough, and had a fever.

Muscle Aches and Pain
As I mentioned above, muscle aches and pains are very common with the flu and not so much with a common cold. While I don't know what getting hit by a bus feels like, I would imagine this is the feeling that gave that phrase life. You literally feel like a giant bruise.

Fatigue
I also don't know what pregnancy fatigue feels like, but this is how I would imagine it. I'm tired y'all. Like I just woke up and want need to go back to sleep. I walked up the 3 flights to my apartment last night and needed to sit down for an hour. It's sheer exhaustion. Make sure you get plenty of rest!

Fever
Fevers are not guaranteed with the flu, but it is possible. For me, I had low-grade fevers for a day and a half before I ever hit 101.8 F and while I suspected I had the flu, I wasn't actually diagnosed until this point because I finally took myself to urgent care. Fevers can often be managed by over the counter medications, like acetaminophen, but providers usually prescribe tamiflu when officially diagnosed and recommend medications like DayQuil which have anti-pyretics (fever reducers) in them.

Nasal Congestion
Similar to a cold, it is difficult to breathe easily through your nose. You may experience periods of easy breathing mixed with stuffiness that just won't clear. Ensuring that your nasal passages stay moist is the best way to manage this issue. Using saline nasal spray is the best thing for managing this issue, along with decongestants.

Cough
A dry, persistent cough is fairly common with the flu. This was the first symptom I noticed (aside from slightly sore muscles that I thought were from working out) that was a dead giveaway that I had the flu. Coughs serve a purpose in getting better, so while I don't recommend any cough suppressants, definitely take some cough drops will help ease this symptom.

Sore Throat
This may come from coughing so much, or maybe that's just my case, but my throat has been more sore on days 3 and 4 than days 1 and 2. It feels raw from all of the coughing, but the best way to combat this sore throat is to drink plenty of fluids, tea with honey (to coat the throat!), and gargling with salt water.

The flu can often be dealt with at home by managing your symptoms, however you should consult your doctor and do what is most comfortable FOR YOU/YOUR FAMILY MEMBER if someone is sick. While I am a nurse, I will not pretend to offer this post as official steps to care for yourself or a loved one in place of your provider's professional opinion should you suspect someone has the flu. This is merely what I experienced and how I've managed with my first ever personal case of the flu and even went to the doctor.

Shameless plug:

Flu season is much longer than many suspect - it typically lasts from October to March (sometimes even April) and each year, different strains are more prevalent than others. While being vaccinated does not guarantee you will not get the flu, the single most important thing you can do to protect yourself, your children and grandparents, and those who are immunocompromised and cannot receive vaccines - like my patient population - is to get the flu shot!

#FabFitFun

Recently I received my very first ever FabFitFun box and I am so excited to share with y'all what was inside! I'm sure you all have seen these boxes popping up on your Snapchat ads, all over instagram and even Facebook. I have been wanting to get one, but each time, I was justttt a little too late to receive that season's box and would be getting the Editor's Box instead - which is an equally awesome box sent to people who sign up in between seasonal boxes!

My preference was just to start with the seasonal box.
Let's take a peak at what was inside, shall we?

This amazing Vince Camuto bag! Funny enough, right before I received my box, I spotted two or three people with this bag and LOVED it on them!

This gorgeous flower Catherine Malandrino umbrella, which is just the right size to throw into my new bag by the way!

Blue in Capri by Skin & Co shower gel:
I haven't had the chance to try this just yet, but I'm extremely excited - the smell reminds me of Europe (idk how to describe that, aside from heavenly - not floral or citrus-y though).

GlamGlow Bubble Sheet face masks:
Let me be perfectly clear - I am a sucker for face masks (I have a drawer under my sink dedicated to them) so this is right up my alley.

Metallic Liquid Foil Lipstick Duo in Penny that goes great with my skin tone

I've been dying to try a French press coffee maker, and just my luck I got one now! This Alfred French Press that said "But First, Coffee" is my mantra - it just gets me. And I love how easy it is to use!

The infamous Beauty Blender - which has already been put to work!

Luna Rica (meaning rich and delicious) bar in Salted Caramel.
Can we all sing "yum" in unison now?

This Grown Alchemist Cream Cleanser has made the whole "wash your makeup off your face before bed" routine about 15x easier. It's a gentle cleanser that takes off my makeup and leaves my face feeling fresh and clean without scrubbing like a mad woman.

The picture doesn't do these Simply Whimsical Hand Towels any justice. The gray and white pattern are a beautiful neutral that go with just about any kitchen. I use these towels to get food out of the oven, set hot dishes on, and wipe up spills! They're lightweight, yet durable and a must for high traffic areas.

So, if you're like me and you're looking to get a nice little surprise in the mail every now and then, use my code to get $10 off your first box!!

2 Articles on How to Care for the Postpartum Mom

Recently, I have read some alarming articles on how America is the most dangerous place to give birth in the world for developed countries. This is likely due to the risk of hemorrhaging or having a stroke, and not to the actual act of giving birth. Based on my own experiences as a nurse who works on a postpartum unit, I find some of the articles I've read to be extremely shocking and scary, but I've also seen the truth in them as well. I've seen and taken care of the hemorrhaging mom. I've called a code on moms with extremely high blood pressures, as well as moms with scarily low blood pressures. I've noticed the changes in my patients as they've developed magnesium toxicity, or how their vitals and symptoms indicated a possible pulmonary embolism.

What scares me most is I've seen and taken care of the patients mentioned in the following articles. I've called the doctor and told them I don't feel like their patient should be discharged. I have had to give my assessment and nursing judgment on critical patients by phone, only to have the doctor take hours to come visit the patient I'm very concerned about. I've had patients that I felt shouldn't be able to go home due to my fear of them stroking out due to such high blood pressures - like some of the women in these articles - but the doctor discharged them anyway.

One thing I always do before sending my moms home is go over when to call the doctor - high blood pressures; pain, heat and swelling of the calves; mood swings and uncontrollable crying; severe abdominal cramps; clots larger than a ping pong ball; etc. Since so many new changes are occurring to these women's bodies, I want them to know exactly what to look for, and when exactly to call the doctor or go to the emergency room without hesitation.

I can only hope that when the time comes for me to become a mom, I have nurses and doctors that are advocating for me and my health as much as I do for my patients now.

New Blog Name!

Found Here

Yes, it's true!

I have a new blog name and I LOVE IT!

I had been thinking long and hard about what I should change my blog name to, when it hit me like a ton of bricks - why not change my name to something related to nursing? Duh.

Although a bunch of different nurse/medical phrases came to mind, I wanted to keep it as simple as possible, and that's how "A Dose of Allie, PRN" was born. For those who don't know, "prn" is an abbreviation for as needed.

Now the content of my blog will remain much the same - a little bit of everything - but I will try to focus more on nursing, traveling, and health related aspects of my life. I am so excited to share my journey with you all!

Major (League) News!

*Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post; I was not compensated for it and al opinions are my own*

Spring has taken a little while to arrive here in Atlanta, but it is finally here to stay!

Some of my favorite things about the spring are seeing all of the beautiful flowers blooming, the sun shining (most) of the day, the smell of freshly mowed grass, and heading to a baseball game to cheer on the home team.

What better way to cheer on your favorite team as a group than to include the little ones in all the fun??

This spring, The Honest Company has decided to bring the game to the babies by releasing a collection of Major League Baseball diapers - just in time for the season!

With my sisters both having kids, especially having a niece who just turned one in February, our family has been a huge fan of The Honest Company and their diapers for as long as I can remember.

Whether you're a huge baseball fan, a huge baby fan, or just a huge fan of quality diapers from a company that strives to only include the necessary ingredients in their products, you can't go wrong with these amazing diapers.

But I mean seriously y'all, who wouldn't want their precious baby rocking a team diaper like this?

Take Me Back!

So about this time last year, I decided I needed to go visit my parents who live overseas. I jumped right in and bought a plane ticket to Portugal, with only little hesitation (it was my first time flying overseas)!

Now the time has come to go visit again. Earlier this month, I bought a ticket to Portugal (again), but I also bought a few other tickets as well! My brother, a few of his friends, and myself are going on a little Eurotrip before my brother graduates from med school and begins residency.

A little on last year's trip - my adventure kicked off with a 9 hour flight to Germany, a 4 hour layover, and then a 2 hour flight to Portugal. My parents were elated that I was visiting - especially since I was there for 10 days! Much of the trip was spent exploring local towns, beaches and looking at houses with my parents. Mom and I managed to take a trip to Lisbon and Sintra sometime during the middle of my stay, and my parents and I all went to Sevilla, Spain two days before I left.

This time around, I'll only be in Portugal for a total of 5 days. Visiting the parents is sandwiching an excursion in London, Amsterdam and Berlin for me, with the boys going on a slightly longer trip than my own. I am BEYOND excited to head back to Europe and explore more of the unknown (to me).

Any tips or things I definitely need to see while over there??

What Nursing Is Not

As a nurse, I have often been asked "so, what do you do all day?" and to be quite honest, that question irks me.
What don't I do?
As a nurse, I am a psychologist, waiter, cheerleader, confidant, and advocate to name a few.

I feel like some people have an opinion of nurses that are way off base. SO I'm here to clear up the air a tiny bit.

Nursing is not sexy.
We do not take care of patients while wearing mini dresses with our cleavage all in the patient's face. Our hair is not in pigtails as we saunter to pass meds in our stilettos.

Nursing is not a way to meet doctors.
I just recently started working day shift, but previously I worked night shift. I hardly even knew what the attending looked like, let alone if it was a man or a woman. Yes, some people meet their future spouses on this job. That is the exception, not the rule.

Nursing school is not easy.
Nursing school is HARD, ask anyone who went through it. "I have to study" takes on a whole new life of its own when you're going into the medical field.

Nursing is not "have it your way" service.
Do I want you to be comfortable and cared for and well attended to? Yes. Do I also want all of my patients to make it through my shift and into the next one? Yes. That being said, if I have to prioritize fluffing your pillow and grabbing juice OR taking my newly confused patient down to get head scans, I will be choosing the latter. Sorry, not sorry.

Night shift is not easy and boring.
I'll say this one time and ONE TIME ONLY - night shift (on many units) do a lot. We have to be quick on our toes because there's no one else looking at that patient but us, the nurse tech and the family (if they're not sleeping). Oftentimes, the gag is that patients sleep all night so what do nurses have to do? Well, a few months ago I worked a shift where I clocked in at 7pm, and at 8pm we had a code met (meaning the patient was unstable and possibly needed to be transferred to the ICU). At 11pm that same night, we had 2 different patients who needed to go to the ICU because one of them was projectile vomiting and the other had an elevated sodium of 160. At the same time, we were informed we would be receiving a patient who was confused, combative and had an elevated sodium of 155. Needless to say, that night was insanely busy. Nurses, both day and night, have a lot of responsibility and each shift has it's busy and stressful moments.

Nursing is a career, and a calling, of passion. Depending on the unit in which you work, it takes a lot out of you physically, mentally and emotionally. It's not for everyone, but for those who do it - it is rewarding.

Currently

I've always loved these little posts about what is currently going on in life, so it's time I filled one out of my own!

Currently, I am:

Reading
Admittedly it's an audiobook, but I'm "reading" a book called The Couple Next Door. It's about a couple whose baby gets kidnapped while they are at a dinner party at their neighbor's house. So far, I'm loving it!

Listening to
I've been loving Erykah Badu's album But You Caint Use My Phone, as well as Kendrick Lamar's Damn

Watching
Queen of the South. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show. My friend Genesis got me started watching this since she loved La Reina del Sur and figured, "why not watch the English version?" We literally just started watching this show together last Saturday night, finished 3 episodes together and homegirl was through episode 9 by Sunday night. Needless to say, I've got to catch up to her.

Thinking about
My new job! I had to wait to say anything, but I got a new job as a mother/baby nurse! I'll still be working within the same healthcare company, but at a new location and with day shift hours!

Wearing
Black soft shorts and white t-shirt from Target. Very basic. Very easy.

Texting
My best friend Gabbi. We don't text everyday, but we do send each other random snaps/tweets/messages. While we may live in different states and have very busy lives, it never takes much to make me feel like we're in the same room talking and laughing like back in high school.

Date Night

Admittedly, I love going on dates.

I love being wined and dined. I love dressing up since I wear scrubs 98.3% of the week.
However, I don't go out with just anyone. Unlike some women, I do actually have to like the guy.

Sometimes though, going out on a lot of dates with said guy can get to be expensive, so to break up the spending, I'm usually game for going on a variety of types of date whether it's cheap/free or a $200 date.

Here are some prefect date ideas despite your budget:

Free
Watching planes - heck, I've done this alone and loved it
Going for a walk
Hiking at a local trail/mountain
A day at the pool
Star gazing - maybe you'll even catch a meteor shower!
Read and hammock together
Drive around new subdivisions and look at houses
Feed the ducks
Game night (maybe include some friends in this one)

Low Cost
Ice cream
Cook each other your favorite meal - you gon' get this mac and cheese, string beans and fried chicken ;)
Picnic at the park - Publix subs and some water/lemonade
Home movie night - complete with Dollar Store popcorn and candy
Plant flowers - nothing makes me smile quite like fresh flowers

Medium Cost
Visit the museum - visit on a discounted day for a lower cost!
Go to a water park
Water rafting
Kayaking
Creating your own food tour - 1 app, 1 entree and 1 dessert from different restaurants
Go to a sports game - they usually have cheap tickets if you don't mind sitting up high!

High Cost
I'm pretty sure you all know what an expensive date entails.
Ruth's Chris? A weekend getaway? Caviar, champagne and the works? Skydiving? Shopping spree?
If you dream of it, then that's your expensive date :)

Cheers to great dates full of fun, laughter, and getting to know one each other!

MIA

Where have you been?
You should start blogging again?
Where's the update?

All things I've heard over the last few months while I hiatus-ed from this little part of the world. Admittedly, I miss this place but I miss something else even more.

I miss my parents.
(however that's not why I took a break... we'll get to that)

My parents moved overseas around the time I last pressed "publish," and while I didn't really expect to be too much affected by it, I was. My parents are my rock and my mom is my best friend, so for them to leave and go on this new adventure - I was a bit of an emotional mess. Instead of dealing with my emotions head on from the jump, I brushed it under the rug. Instead I dove into my job and turned to friends/relationships to occupy my mind and time.

Don't get me wrong, I am beyond excited for my parents. This childless adventure is well-deserved, well-earned and well overdue. My parents are amazing and they have spent the greater portion of their lives making sure that my siblings and I were raised in a stable and loving household, received great educations, and developed into morally sound human beings. Even though my father got to travel as part of his career, my mother has always dreamed of traveling more, so now that they are in a position to do so without kids, they honestly and truly deserve to go see the world.

Let's be clear about something though -
My hiatus isn't because I missed my parents.
My hiatus was because I felt like nothing I had to say was important. Nothing was happening in my life worth talking about - I went to work, I slept and I occasionally hung out with my friends. I entered into a relationship that, in hindsight, was detrimental to my mental and emotional health, but I didn't want to talk about that either. In addition, I had about a two month span of my patients dying and my apartment was falling apart - doors getting stuck, termite swarm in the bedroom window, leaking kitchen sink for two weeks. On the positive side, I had friends having babies, getting engaged and/or married. I had friends earning promotions and degrees. All things I thought were wonderful and definitely blog-worthy, but not on my blog because it wasn't about me or even my business to talk about.

It was in that time that the undertone of sadness began creeping its way into everything I wrote, so all the saved drafts got deleted because I didn't want to talk about death and dying, my parents, my apartment or relationship woes. I didn't want a pity party. I didn't want to come off "weak" or "unhappy" when in reality, that was how I felt - unhappy, sad and alone.

So even though I'm not in the greatest mindset/job/apartment of my life, even though I still have things I'm dealing with (as we all are), and even though I still miss my parents everyday, I miss this blog.
I miss you guys. I miss being creative.
I miss having an outlet.
If no one reads my blog anymore, it's okay. I'm not writing this solely for you.
I'm writing this because this blog is my therapy - it makes me smile, it takes me happy

and I miss it.

Life Lessons

A few years back I interviewed my dad for a class I was taking at the time. My dad is always giving me little words of encouragement and offering up gems of wisdom, so I figured I would share it with y'all. It's short and to the point, but maybe it's something one of you needs to see today.

Q: What would you consider your biggest life lesson?
D: I'd say don't focus on getting to a destination or point in your life - whether it's getting married or having a particular job or getting a degree and getting out of college. Life, as cliche as it sounds, really is a journey and not a destination. You should really just enjoy every day and make the most of every single day, because when you get to those destinations, they often aren't as exciting as you thought they'd be and they won't make you as happy as you think they will.

Q: How do you stay positive when things don't go your way?
D: You know... I just don't get too down when things are going bad and I don't get too happy when things are good. How could you appreciate the sunshine if it never rained? I try to remember not to give up or get depressed when things get hard because it will pass.

Q: How do you feel about getting older/aging?

D: I feel that [aging] is part of the process. People complain, but quite frankly, it beats the alternative! You either get older or you die. Getting older is all about life experiences. Sure the physical part isn't great - not being as agile, sharp, whatever - but having those new memories to talk about is always wonderful!

Vegas

Earlier this week I mentioned that I went to Vegas for the first time ever back in April. The girls and I stayed at The Mirage and had a blast. We took so many pictures, met some amazing people and created so many memories. While I wish I could give you more details, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
