Riviera Maya, Say What!?

I took only 10.5 billion pictures on this trip, so in order to prevent y'all from scrolling for years, I'm breaking it up into several posts!

Woke up at 4:15 am, drove to Marta, 40 minute trip to the airport, went through security and customs, all by 7:30 am.

With an 8:54 am flight to Cancun and an hour long drive to Riviera Maya, we (my friend and I) expected to be on the beach before noon, soaking up all that sunshine. How naive we were.

We, along with four other groups of travelers, all took one van from the airport to be dropped off at our respective hotels. Logic would have it that if EVERY group had to be let off on the left side and the way the highways work involve making a U-turn ANY time you want to get to anything on the other side of the road (i.e - drive past hotel property on left, u-turn, drive back to hotel property, make right, drive 10 min down property to drop someone off, come back out and make right, drive, U-turn to continue driving the same way we were originally going), you would drive to the furthest location, drop those people (us) off and then continue to drop people off on the way back to the airport so that no U-turns would be necessary. But no. We did it the complicated way I explained up there. Let me show you what that jumbled mess basically translates to:

So we got into the airport by 11 am and didn't get to our hotel until 2 pm.
Whatevs.
A full day still awaited us.
Lunch and 3 margaritas later, I had my toes in the beautiful white sand. Later we met some very cool people at the swim up pool bar from Virginia Beach that were here for a wedding (well, we met the MOH, her best guy friend and his best guy friend). 3 margaritas and a Caipirinha later, we got dressed for dinner. We went to a delicious Japanese dinner, then the 24 hour lobby bar and toured the HUGE property (which we frequently referred to as "the compound"). We were invited out by the people we had met earlier that day but we were exhausted and passed out.

Enjoy the pics from day numero uno.

Side note: in Mexico, don't ever respond to "Hablas Español?" with "Un poquito."
A full conversation in Spanish will ensue.
You've been warned.
